Interesting that all of the scanner/copier reviews ended the same way: "I then just pull it up and save it to the directory" Wouldn't it be better if this was done programatically? Has anyone a solution for this problem? My wish list is this: Have a program that allows you to catalog the scan, and save it as part of a program. Yes, CaseMap may do this, but can it do it without human intervention?
I am talking about something (like barcode) that you can place in front of the scan so that the software routes the scan to the particular directory -- OR -- a database program that catalogs scans and allows you to organize them for the particular file. Yes I know that there are some programs like this that cost about as much as my copier. I just want something like PaperPort but with a little more power.
Michelle Holly-Ashley responded:
Kyocera-Mita has an extremely useful line of high speed copier/scanners.... Doculex has the bar code technology as an option, as well as a fill in page, similar to the test answer strips used in schools. These options allow the user to set up barcodes for specific matters, as well as specific document types within the matters....

Further to Michelle Holly-Ashley's post, I would like to see a solution taken one step further.... In addition to (or instead of) a barcode, I would like the cover sheet to include a number of fields that the viewer can fill in by hand (or through Word/WordPerfect if necessary). From there the system will recognize the handwritten (obviously legible) text, name the document, add any other index fields, place it into the appropriate matter folder and subfolder (ie. correspondence, pleadings etc.)....
The features that you have talked about in your posting match up quite well with FileCenter. With FileCenter you can batch process documents with custom separators. The separators do not read hand writing but they are easily created through the interface. If you need to save a lot of paper all you do is insert the separators between each document and FileCenter creates separate files that are ready to be routed. FileCenter also includes unique OCR software that converts any document image to fully readable and searchable text with 98% accuracy. My FileCenter is designed for small to medium offices so the price is quite reasonable and the software is compatible with most scanners as well.
