Save/Open Integration

If you haven't discovered FileCenter's Save/Open integration yet, this newsletter is for you. If you haven't discovered how customizable the Save/Open integration is, you'd better keep reading too.

First, a bit of history. The Save/Open integration dates back to the very first edition of FileCenter. We knew that if we wanted FileCenter to truly help users organize their files, we needed it to replace Windows' Save and Open dialogs with custom dialogs that showed your cabinet interface. We also knew that this feature needed to work with just about any program. And we didn't want it to involve any sort of plug-ins or add-ons. Well, to make a long story short, after months of Edison-like trial and error, we struck on a clever way to do it. And to this day, not a single one of our competitors has managed to duplicate it.

The Basics

In a nutshell, FileCenter can capture the Save As and Open commands of just about any program, popping up your cabinets instead of the usual window. This makes it possible to save directly into your cabinets and open files straight out of your cabinets.

To turn it on, go to FileCenter's Settings, select Save/Open Dialogs on the left, then select Enable custom Save As & Open Dialogs.

Adding Custom Programs

FileCenter comes ready to integrate with the most common programs, like office suites, web browsers, and email clients. But you may have other programs where you'd like to use FileCenter's Save As & Open integration. Easily accomplished:

Go to FileCenter's Settings > Save/Open Dialogs. Select the option that says Enable only for Selected Applications below. You'll now see a list of programs. You need to add yours to the list. So hit the Add App button.

Now you need to browse out to your program. If you have a shortcut to the program on your Desktop, browse out to it. Otherwise you'll need to browse out to the program's ".exe" file. You'll find most programs in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86).

Once you've added your program's .exe to the list, the Save/Open integration should start working immediately.

Switching Back to the Regular Dialogs

Let's suppose there's a program where you never want FileCenter to appear. Turning off the integration on a program-by-program basis isn't just possible, it's easy.

Once again, go back to Settings > Save/Open Dialogs and select Enable only for Selected Applications below. Locate your program on the list, and remove the check mark. That's it.

But what if you only need to switch back to the regular dialogs on a case-by-case basis? You have two ways to do it. First, notice on FileCenter's Save/Open dialogs there's a button named Switch to Windows. That will temporarily switch back to the regular dialog. Or even easier, just hit the Esc button on your keyboard.

Lacerte DMS Discontinued

Many of our customers in tax-related fields use Intuit's Lacerte tax preparation software. Intuit just announced that they're dropping the document management add-on for Lacerte (Lacerte DMS).

Those of you who use Lacerte probably won't be a bit fazed by this announcement, because you use FileCenter with Lacerte. We think all of Lacerte's users should hear about that option.

Mary E. Kroenung, Intuit's Senior Project Manager over the tax group, said, "We are teaming with companies that are innovative and strategic in the workflow of our accountants." We're working to put FileCenter on that list of companies, and we could use your help.

If you use FileCenter with Lacerte, you can do us a favor by contacting Intuit, letting them know about your experience with FileCenter, and suggesting they list FileCenter as "an excellent replacement for Lacerte DMS that doesn't require the Cloud":
